MOUNT MERU MILLERS ZAMBIA

INTRODUCTION

This is one of the leading Oil Marketing Companies in Zambia registered with the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) to distribute, export and import petroleum products. It was registered in April 2007 and has ascended to become one of the country’s top OMCs.

The company boasts of 17 filling stations, a 2 million litre fuel storage depot and its own fleet of tanker trucks for fuel deliveries. More filling stations are currently under construction. It supplies fuel to customers who are distributed all over the country.

In its third year of operations, Mount Meru Petroleum Zambia was recognised by the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) for Tax compliance and contribution to national development in the Medium Tax payer category under Coal, Petroleum products.

Location Area

The company’s plant is located at plot number 167505, Great North Road, Katuba about 30km north of Lusaka. It also has an office shared with Mount Meru Petroleum in Lusaka’s Mass Media area.

PRODUCT

The cooking oil brand produced by Mount Meru Millers is Soyola. The edible oil is of the highest quality and is 100% Soya unblended oil. The product is produced from locally farmed and supplied Soya beans. This a local product of international standards which we intend to put on the international market soon.

Our cooking oil is packaged in different sizes to meet the needs and budgets of multiple consumers as follows. 12 x 500mls case

  • 6 x 2.5ltrs case
  • 4 x 5ltrs case
  • 1 x 10ltrs containers
  • 1 x 20ltrs containers

Mount Meru Millers Zambia will also produce high quality cooking oil from other oil seeds including Sunflower and Cotton seed. Apart from the edible oil which is the main product of the plant, the by-products of production – seed cake and seed husk will be produced and used for animal feed and boiler fuel. All the Soya beans and Sunflower are, and will be sourced exclusively from the local farmers. More than 100,000 tons of Soya beans had been bought by the end of August 2012 from the farmers.

The Zambian produced cooking oil similar to the product from its already existing sister concerns in other countries. Mount Meru Millers already has a presence in much of east Africa including Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. It is a leading manufacturer of sunflower edible oils. Its Goldy, Sunola and Floral brands are very popular in the region.

In Zambia, Mount Meru Millers is the third subsidiary to operate in the country. Mount Meru Petroleum was the first was registered followed by Acer infrastructure.

The first of the group’s activities in the country was started by Mount Meru Petroleum (Z) Ltd and shortly followed by Acer Infrastructure.

Mr Himanshu Shah, a chartered accountant is leads both Mount Meru Petroleum and Millers and supported by a strong team of experienced staff in both industries. He has headed the company since its establishment in Zambia and has seen it through its growth up to its current status locally.

THE PLANT

The plant is a totally integrated unit from seed crushing to oil refining with the latest state of the art machinery. It is located on a 150 acre piece of land, 30 acres of which has been developed. The plant building includes a refinery, a laboratory for quality testing and a storage shed. The plant is the largest of its kind in the region with a crushing capacity of close to 120,000 tons per year. Plans are on course for the future expansion of the plant.

A 36,000 tone storage Silo has also been constructed at the plant to facilitate the storage of large quantities of seasonal raw materials which will be sourced to ensure continuous supply. The $US30 million project.

The plant has dedicated sections for the smooth operations and efficient performance in its production processes. The main sections include:

  • Receiving: This comprises of a weigh bridge and warehouse storage space. Purchasing and sorting of grain are done under this section
  • Preparation Section: In this section, the initial preparation of the oil seed in done. It includes cleaning, cracking, cooking, flaking and expanding the oil seed.
  • Solvent Plant: It is in the section where extraction of the oil begins.
  • Refinery section: Deodorization and discoloration among others are done here.
  • Packaging: The finished product is bottled and packed into different packages at this point in readiness for dispatch
  • Dispatch: At this point, the product sorted out, ready to be sent on the market according to the customer orders.

SALES AND DISTRIBUTION

Mount Meru Millers’ goal is to distribute a high quality product of international standard at a reasonable price to all provinces of the country. All logistics are already in place for this.

Our own transport will be used for deliveries of the product to most locations and we have already identified established transporters to collaborate with for transportation of our products to other parts of the country who deliver similar products regularly on behalf of other companies.

STANDARDS

The standards of the products will conform to standards as set by the Zambia Bureau of Standards.

Samples are taken from each section of production starting from the unprocessed oil seed just after purchasing the product before it goes under processing up to the final finished product. Our product is also packed under the highest hygienic conditions.

We intend to have our product and plant accredited so that they conform to both local and international standard. Processes towards achieving this have already been initiated.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The Mount Meru Group has always been conscious of giving back to the communities in which they operate.

In line with this, Mount Millers constructed a 1 x 3 classroom block at Katuba Basic School located in the same area which the plant is located. This was before the plant even started operations and the classroom block was dedicated and handed over to the school in September 2012. The company as already donated several food stuffs to residents of the area including assisting those in need and did this when it helped those whose housing unit collapsed.

This is an indication of the company’s commitment to giving back to the community and will even do more once it is in full fledged production.
